Mumbai Port working towards further enhancing efficiency: Radhakrishnan

To further enhance its efficiency, Mumbai Port has taken up many initiatives like construction of new berths, installation of floating cranes, mechanisation of Port operations, etc. during the last few years, Mr Pon. Radhakrishnan, Minister of State for Shipping, informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply to a question last week. The Port has already awarded the contract for capital dredging to achieve (-) 19 metre Chart Datum (CD) at berth pocket and (-) 15 metre CD at anchorage of the ongoing 5th Oil Berth at Jawahar Dweep, to accommodate large vessels like Suezmaxes and partially loaded Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs). As per schedule, the completion date of the capital dredging project at the 5th Oil Berth is towards the end of November 2016, it was pointed out. Mumbai Port handled 61.11 million tonnes of cargo in 2015-16.
